Welcome 5G: a new paradigm

The opportunities for different businesses and commercial models that arise thanks to this new connectivity technology.

Is 5G here to change the world? We live in a hyper-connected world that demands ever-increasing speed, and 5G promises to be the savior of any connectivity problem we've had in the past, heading toward a completely wireless future. 4G did revolutionise the mobile world by allowing high-definition streaming from anywhere. But 5G will go a step further, and is expected to generate 10 trillion dollars in revenue by 2035.

What is 5G? 5G stands for fifth generation, the fifth standard for cellular network operation. Technically it adds lower and higher frequencies to the spectrum, allowing networks to handle 1 million devices per square kilometer. It also has very low latency (the time it takes a signal to travel from one device to another), making it ideal for artificial intelligence and IoT (Internet of Things).

5G has the potential to be faster than any wired Wi-Fi network and can be virtually anywhere there's a signal. This means IoT devices can operate anywhere, not limited to local wireless networks, and becomes particularly interesting in two use cases: smart cities and global connectivity.

In smart cities, IoT would allow cities to track their inner workings like never before. Artificial intelligence could be used to relieve congestion in traffic flows, manage energy distribution, and much more. In terms of global connectivity, 5G has the potential to give underserved populations worldwide access to high-speed Internet, allowing them to get jobs in technology through the potential that Internet offers. It is somewhat concerning regarding data privacy, but it is a known challenge with any emerging technology.

Concrete examples of use: major sports networks are already using 5G micro-networks to broadcast live events completely wirelessly. With a single network, up to 30 4K cameras can be streamed live. Imagine attending a live soccer match with virtual reality in 4K definition. In summary, 5G will likely bring a new era. It will allow businesses a great number of opportunities if they have access to fast data anywhere, making artificial intelligence and predictive learning thrive.
